Educational Outline

Curriculum

The curriculum of this course is composed of three subject categories. These are Advanced Seminars: Global Humanities and Social Sciences Ⅰ & Ⅱ, Research Seminar Ⅰ & Ⅱ, and Research Guidance. The objectives and contents of each subject category are as follows.

Advanced Seminars: Global Humanities and Social Sciences Ⅰ・Ⅱ

These advanced seminars will focus on the research fields of the Sociocultural Research Department, the Linguistic Research Department, and the Japan, Nagasaki, and Maritime Area Studies and Asian Research Department. They will concentrate on multicultural sociology as a new, holistic and interdisciplinary field of knowledge. This knowledge will form the foundation for students’ ability to discern the true essence of issues in inventive and exceptional ways as a response to multiculturalism in the 21ˢᵗ century. In addition, they will help equip students with the ability to summarize research results in their specialized research fields from a holistic viewpoint, based on the above framework, and also enable them to carry out transcultural discussions.

Research Seminar Ⅰ・Ⅱ

In Research Seminar Ⅰ, students will approach research topics based on one of the following five research fields (systems): the Sociocultural Research Department; the Linguistic Research Department; the Japan, Nagasaki, and Maritime Area Studies and Asian Research Department; the Public Policy Research Department; and the Abolition of Nuclear Arms and Peace Studies Department. Under the supervision of the research guidance team, they will formulate high-quality research plans that contribute to the construction of a sustainable society. They will conduct research based on those plans, while developing a more advanced ability to discern the true essence of issues and the ability to present various solutions to solve problems arising from multiculturalism in the 21ˢᵗ century.

In Research Seminar Ⅱ, students will carry on and further develop their results from Research Seminar Ⅰ. Under the supervision of the research guidance team, students will make greater strides in their own research while further enhancing their ability to discern the true essence of issues and the ability to present various solutions for solving problems in multicultural situations.

Research Guidance

In Research Guidance, as students consider the material addressed in Research Seminar Ⅰ and Research Seminar Ⅱ and further develop those results, they will write doctoral dissertations utilizing arguments, methods, analyses, discussions, and demonstrations that are appropriate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. They will also aim to acquire the abilities specified in the diploma policies of each department.
