Dean’s Message

Dean of SGHSS
Prof. Wang Wang Wei

Contemporary society is entering an era marked by an unprecedented level of global interdependence, which is inextricably intertwined with complex crises. Artificial intelligence and cyberspace have increasingly blurred the boundaries between reality and fiction, and risks such as international conflicts, environmental problems and social fragmentation are becoming progressively inseparable, presenting both global and local challenges. In the face of this unfamiliarity, we are being called upon to create a desirable future in which diverse cultures intersect and live together within an expanding, globally interconnected multicultural society.

GSGHSS serves as a place to research these fundamental questions shared by all of humanity. With “multicultural society” as the key concept, GSGHSS pioneers a ‘glocal’ approach that bridges the social sciences and humanities. Its goal is to conduct comprehensive research on issues of coexistence in a globalized world and explore pathways to a sustainable society.

GSGHSS is committed to cultivating individuals with intellectually inquisitive minds and practical abilities. These people will lead the way in solving complex contemporary problems represented by global risks, while keeping an eye on new academic horizons which fuse theory and practice.

Through collaboration with researchers and instructors with professional backgrounds from Japan and abroad, and fieldwork and transdisciplinary research that transcends academic disciplines, we provide an environment in which each graduate student can actively engage in the search for and implementation of innovative solutions.

On the Master’s Course, students deepen their expertise while integrating knowledge from different fields. This program is designed to cultivate critical thinking, conceptual and practical skills necessary to discover, analyze and solve social problems. On the Doctoral Course, graduate students are trained as researchers and highly skilled professionals who can grasp the essential issues of multicultural societies, create new academic knowledge and share their findings on the international stage.

The future of a society where diverse values intersect is not predetermined, and human choices and actions create new possibilities. In such a world, we must embrace the challenge of transcending the boundaries of knowledge and strive to cultivate a global and multifaceted perspective.
