Application Guidelines for Graduate Research Students

A research student is a student who decides on a research theme and conducts research under the guidance of a specific faculty member at the undergraduate or graduate school. Therefore, in principle, they cannot take lecture courses at the undergraduate or graduate school.
If those who wish to take undergraduate or graduate courses, they should apply as a non-degree student.

 

1.Eligibility
Applicants must fall under any of the following categories.
(1) Those who hold a master’s degree, a professional degree, or a doctoral degree (including those who expect to receive such a degree).
(2) Those who have been conferred a degree equivalent to a master’s, professional, or doctoral degree in a foreign country (including those who expect to receive such a degree).
(3) Those who are deemed to have academic ability equivalent or superior to a master’s degree, a professional degree, or a doctor’s degree by this graduate school.

2.Admission Permission
Research students are admitted at the beginning of each semester (April for the first semester, October for the second semester).
However, admission may be granted even in the middle of a semester if the University deems that there are special circumstances.

3.Application Period

First semester Second semester
 

By the end of December

(or, if this is a holiday, the first following weekday)

For those who take the entrance examination for the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of  GHSS (January term), the deadline is the last day of February after the results are known.

 

 

By the end of June

(or, if this is a holiday, the first following weekday).

 

 

4.Research Period
The research period is limited to one year. However, if there is a request for an extension of the research period for research reasons, an extension may be granted for a period of up to one year.

5.Application Procedures
Before applying, the applicants must contact their preferred academic supervisor and obtain his/her prior consent by submitting an application document such as a resume and a research plan.
Find a faculty member here or contact the GSGHSS Student Affairs Section of the School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences.
② After obtaining the consent of your preferred supervisor, submit your application documents to GSGHSS Student Affairs Section, Administration Division for School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences and Faculty of Education by the application deadline.

※ Note that the application documents will not be accepted if the consent of the supervisor has not been obtained by the deadline.
③ Note that even if the application documents are submitted by the deadline, if the documents are incomplete, they will not be accepted.
④ Applicants from abroad should ask their supervisor to process their application for a certificate of eligibility(COE) after admission.

The following documents must be submitted to GSGHSS Student Affairs Section, Administration Division for School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences and Faculty of Education.

  <How to make a payment from abroad: in English>  <How to make a payment from JAPAN: in Japanese>

  • A photograph (3.0 cm ( H ) x 2.4 cm ( W )) for the research student ID card (write your name on the back)
    * If “Research Plan” and “Summary of Previous Research” are written in a language other than Japanese or English, an abstract must be attached in Japanese or English. For certificates and other documents written in languages other than Japanese, a Japanese or English translation should be attached.

7.How to Submit Application Documents
Application documents must be submitted to the following email address and then in addition by mail(EMS) no later than the application deadline mentioned in 3. above.

8.Expenses required for enrollment, etc.
(1) Entrance fee: 84,600 yen (Transfer the fee to the designated account and submit a certificate of receipt to GSGHSS Student Affairs Section.)
(2) Tuition fee: 29,700 yen/month
 Tuition will be collected separately in April for the first semester and in October for the second semester,
based on the monthly tuition amount multiplied by the number of months of enrollment in that semester.
  Method of payment will be automatic withdrawal from each individual’s designated bank account.
 The entrance and tuition fees already paid will not be refunded for whatever reason.
(3) The cost of materials required for practical training shall be borne by the student as necessary.
